The early symptoms of HAPE are breathlessness on exertion and reduced exercise tolerance, greater than expected for the altitude. Untreated, there is progression to breathlessness at rest, especially at night, and persistent cough. The cough can either be dry or progress to produce white, watery, or frothy fluid.
